PRICE REDUCTION – OWNER WILL SELL TO A KIWI
The historic 40-foot gaff-cutter Windward was designed by J. W. Pickering of Sydney and was built and launched in 1923 by J. Hayes & Sons of Milsons point. She has been extensively restored by Simon Sadubin to the original plans and specifications and the 1923 40ft Gaff Cutter original sail plan has been restored.
The finest materials have been used for her new interior and new timber used for the mast, gaff, boom and bowsprit with new bronze fittings. The inboard Mercedes diesel has been overhauled and new electrics installed.
The owner works in the boat industry and while passionate about wooden boats, is not a sailor. He would like to find a share partner in the boat who will ensure Windward is sailed, shown and raced with other classics. An ideal partner in the boat would be an experienced sailor who loves gaffs and timber boats and who can skipper windward and bring crew aboard. This may be a single partner or a small consortium. There could be an option for a 1/3rd share if preferable (one-third share $70k). The important thing is that everyone is in agreement. But note, the boat is lying in Sydney, although the owner welcomes offers from New Zealand.
Brought back to its original gaff cutter configuration under the custodianship of John Firth Smith, based on a surviving plan of the rig from 1923. Almost all of the original timber work and trim has been retained. Fast approaching 100 years old, here is your chance to sail Windward through her centenary.
The carvel planked hull is shallow draft with a copper sheathed timber centreboard. Comes with photos, plans and documentation.
Designed and built to race on and around Sydney Harbour, Windward at various stages won the Morna Cup, Revonah Cup and Gascoigne Cup short ocean race. Prior to restoration Windward has sported a Bermudan rig and a yawl configuration. Originally the foundation boat of the Prince Edward Yacht Club
in Sydney, Windward carried the sail number E1. She now displays A101 of the Sydney Amateurs Sailing Club, well known for their love of Timber boats and as hosts of the Annual Gaffers Day event.
